Turns out it was good advice, following happiness, what I was really doing, without knowing it at the time, was dedicating my life to happiness. I thought he was crazy! While I liked chocolate, I wasn’t convinced I loved it enough to start a company, let alone to dedicate my life to it. He then proceeded to write me a check for one hundred dollars and suggested I start a chocolate company. A friend of mine encouraged me to take a break and do something that made me happy. Oma Chocolate came about because I found myself stuck with writers block, in my senior year of college, not wanting a career in what I had been majoring in. organic glutenfree fairtrade vegan chocolate madeinportland portland Oma came into my life at a time of personal and professional fatigue and opened my eyes to a world of happiness and adventure a world that I want to share. Without even knowing it I started to live the Oma lifestyle and I started exemplifying our founding principle of being yourself. I came to realize that a chocolate really can inspire Courage, Freedom and Happiness within me. In just a few short weeks I’d found myself sleeping in a tent in my parents back yard, waiting for LA, and I couldn’t be happier. I took to adventuring to get pictures of Oma for social media, I started talking to and sharing Oma with complete strangers. ![]() Oma became a source of excitement and ambition, everything revolved around how to make Oma grow and how to share that with people. No longer would my hard work earn me minimal growth and studio apartments. I was taking my own success in my hands and making of it what I could. To me Oma became the embodiment of freedom. But suddenly I was free, I’d given my notice and laid my plans, I was ready for LA and so was Oma! At that time she’d asked me to take on the marketing role for her, however, I was the current candy buyer and could not risk a conflict of interest. Kara had been selling Oma at my store for over a year and I had encouraged her to look toward social media as an inexpensive means of marketing. So when the opportunity presented its self to move to LA I jumped on it. I knew I had to make a change take a risk. No longer was it enough to be loyal, show up early and work hard. It seemed everything my parents taught me about life and work was failing. I’d elevated myself to the position of an Assistant Manager and was making just enough money to keep a consistent roof over my head I’d never owned or even rented a house. At the time Oma Chocolate came into my life I had been working for the same company for about ten years and though I loved my job, at 28 years old I had accomplished few of my life goals. ![]()
